Make your own Science Clock and watch science come to life in front of you! With simple ingredients from the kitchen – like salt water, tin foil and pencils – you'll create electricity to power a real digital clock. Learn how batteries work, discover the magic of chemistry and have fun with a unique STEM experiment that combines knowledge and play. An exciting set that fosters curiosity and shows that science can be simple, creative and fun! HOW IT WORKS: A typical battery, such as an alkaline battery, has three main parts: an anode (usually zinc), a cathode (often manganese dioxide), and an electrolyte (such as potassium hydroxide). When you connect it to a device, such as a game engine, a chemical reaction occurs. The anode releases tiny particles called electrons, which travel to the cathode, creating electricity to power the motor! In your homemade battery, the aluminum foil acts as the anode and the pencil lead as the cathode. When mixed with salt water, as an electrolyte, and attached to an LCD watch, the aluminum releases electrons that flow to the graphite, powering the watch. It produces a small current, enough for the clock but not strong enough for a motor. It's scientific magic!
